This first bit of information should be centered for easy reading and your copy should be on white or off white paper. No fancy fonts, no loud colors, nothing to make it stand out. Why? More than likely it will be trashed if it is not visually appealing. Trust me: in business aviation, which is generally a very conservative field, the flamboyant self promoter is often ignored.

What follows next is open to debate. Some human resources people insist that you need an Objective on your résumé while others do not. If you do include an Objective, please write a strong and positive statement about your career and job objective, concentrating on your strengths and how you can add value to a potential employer. When creating your objective, use clear and concise language. One of the advantages of including an Objective is that it tends to set the tone for the entire résumé. Leaving one out is sometimes preferable if you are applying for different positions. Always state in the Objective what you can contribute to the company and not what you want to get out of the job or the company.

After you write your Objective, you should follow up with your work history. Instead of centering the remaining information, align your copy to the left of the page.

Work History: Please, if you have been working for many years, you might want to consider limiting your information to the last ten years. A résumé is not your job history, rather it is a summation of who you are and what you bring to the table. Save the nitty gritty details for the application form. This is particularly important if you are over 40: do not kid yourself by thinking that age discrimination does not occur. You want to get the interview and then you can work on getting the job during the interview. In some situations you will not even get the interview if someone finds out that you are 49. Is this legal? Usually, no. Is it provable? You probably will never find out.

Training: After including your work history, you will need to list your training. If you completed FACTS, Alteon, FlightSafety, Beyond and Above, etc. then spell it out. Include training locations, dates, and a brief synopsis of the training. For example, "emergency egress training, emergency medical procedures, food safety and culinary arts, wine service, etc." Do not write several paragraphs but do include some information about what was accomplished during your training. Taking other types of training related to the field can and should be mentioned as well including: food service, wine courses, language training, etc. The training section could easily be titled "Education" and include college degrees and other post high school training as well.

References: Please do not include references on your résumé! If you feel the need to mention references, please conclude your résumé with something like this: References furnished upon request. That's it. Nothing fancy. If you do mention that references will be included at a later time please make sure that you have at least three, be prepared to present them upon request, and make sure your references know that you are using them as references.

Hobbies: Hmmm.... I am not sure why some people feel the need to include details on how they spend their free time. Perhaps they are trying to tell the person reading the résumé that they are a well rounded person. In my opinion, save those details for your interview.

Other personal information: In most states giving out one's marital status, age, height and weight is illegal. If you are applying for work overseas the company or agency may want this information in addition to a full length picture of yourself and a headshot. I have heard objections from some about this particular practice. Remember: the U.S. Bill of Rights stops at our borders. If you want to work internationally, you must respect local laws and customs. Your opinion will probably not shape what they want; if you do not like it then do not apply.

College and universities are key institutions where many get their first try at crafting a résumé. I like what the University at Buffalo School of Management has to say about writing a résumé:

I've been playing some sort of World War 2 Air Combat simulator since the days of the Atari ST. Anyone remember Their Finest Hour by LucasArts? I do. It was slow and clunky and the graphics were terrible but somehow it sucked you in. For me it was the role playing elements. Times have moved on and we now have a whole host of excellent combat flight simulators to choose from with more realism and better graphics. I've personally played quite a few, such as LOMAC, CFS 1, 2 and 3, IL2 (and it's many incarnations). Online play for these was ok but I always found myself wanting more. Player spaces were either limited or there was just no one there to play against at my skill level (not high I'm afraid). This led me to search for an online air combat game that could provide both decent servers and lots of combatants at once.

I found just such a service in Aces High II. There's always a server going and I've been on some where there were upwards of 200 players at once. This is truly an awesome achievement and multplies the fun factor immeasurably.

Download was quick as it is only 127MB which expands to about 160MB of hard disk space. You don't need a beefy machine to get decent frame rates out of this one either. Installation was painless and took less than five minutes. Online registration is also a simple affair and I found myself getting onto a 250 player server in a matter of minutes. The server automatically chose the side for me and I found myself in a Jug on an aircraft carrier ready for take off.

By default the game is set to automatic take off but by moving the joystick it shifts to manual and you need to control the plane. It takes a bit of getting used to, especially off an aircraft carrier, but if you've played IL2 you should have no problems adjusting. In game setups are easy to do except the plane is still flying in real time while you're doing so. Just make sure you're trimmed for steady flight and don't have any bogies on your six while you fiddle with these settings.

Understandably, the graphics take a bit of a hit because of the number of players but they are still very nice and there is an admirable level of detail in both the ground scenery and the aircraft. I was particularly impressed with the cockpits. All the guages are working and readable and are where you would expect them to be. If you are familiar with WWII fighter planes you will feel right at home. You can use the mouse to pan your view around freely or use the hat switch on your joystick.

Flight dynamics is similar to any other decent sim out there. Take off will be difficult to a newcomer I think but they have the option of just sitting back and letting the computer do it for them.

I'm interested in mainly flying but for a break you can get into ground vehicles in this sim as well, which just adds to the fun factor. When you're strafing a base it's nice to know that you're being shot at by real people and not some super accurate AI.

Online play is free for two weeks and then you'll need to register to keep playing online. The creators are very generous in that you are still able to get in on the action via a LAN with your buddies or just practice offline for free with no time limits or restrictions.

During the interviewing process, primarily they are chosen for their looks, height and weight. Secondary is their communication skills. Thirdly is their work ethics. If you pass these three criteria, you will be honed to exude elegance and grace as projected by the airlines' image. You get to represent the company and have the responsibility to make a good impression. You get to be checked out every time you are wearing your uniform, so smile and be proud.

THE LIKELIHOOD OF ALWAYS BEING SLIM. You may have seen a few overweight flight attendants but I assure you, majority of us has the ideal body weight. For a 14 hour duty, we get to stand for 3 hours, walk and talk for 9-10 hours and sit for an hour or two depending on the passenger load. You can just imagine the workload and the physical strain we put through. It's like a 13 hour workout at the gym!

BECOME A FIRST AIDER. I'm sure you have experienced emergencies before, from a simple nosebleed to cardiac arrest. What did you do? Did you call for help? Did you give help? Or passed out? Don't be ashamed if you didn't know what to do. Giving first aid can be learned. One chapter will be devoted to teach you how to save a person's life in your career as a flight attendant. It will be very useful, not only when you are at work, but in every day of your life.

NOT A SWIMMER? Even if you are applying in one of the Middle East airlines where there are not too many bodies of water surrounding the area, it is still a must to know how to survive in the open water. In case your aircraft ditches, hopefully not, you are able to save yourself and your passengers. Again, this skill will be handy not only in your professional career as a flight attendant but also when you are in your Hawaii vacation.

FAMILIARIZE WITH AIRPORTS. So where do you go after you check in? No idea. Ask the ground staff who checked you in. Where do you go after the immigration? Again, you have no idea. Ask the immigration officer. You don't know which gate you are supposed to go. Ask one of the passersby wearing uniform. Great! You found it. So finally, you are settled with the right gate before boarding commences and with still the calmest composure to go to your flight. To achieve this smooth experience, it is recommended that you have to check in 4 hours before your international flight and 3 hours if you are flying domestic. But, as someone who is familiarized with the ins and outs of airports, I could check in 2 hours before my international flight and an hour and half if I'm going domestic. Or, you could be a frequent flyer who is traveling as frequent as flight attendant flies.

SUNRISE AND SUNSET AT 36,000 FT ABOVE GROUND LEVEL. I bet that you have marveled when the sun rises or sets at beaches or mountain tops. But have you ever seen the horizon when you are at 36,000 ft high? It makes you think that life is beautiful and that you are blessed to be alive.

WON'T EVER PAY FOR EXCESS BAGGAGE. This is just our little secret but if you are a flight attendant you get this privilege. It pays to have the sweetest smile, apologetic face and a badge that shows you are a flight attendant.

LEARN FIRST CLASS SERVICE. If you are involved in the service industry, it pays to know how to deal with your customers the best way possible. You show professionalism and integrity in what you do.
