We had a good read. For the benefit of yourself. Be sure to read to the end. I want you to get good knowledge from Flight Medical.Trained as a paramedic at the Marin County CA Fire Department, Erin now works as a flight nurse for Airlift Northwest, which is the area's main emergency air transport system. Becoming a flight nurse with Airlift Norwest is no mean achievement. Minimum requirements for all medical personnel include being a registered nurse and having taken advanced life-support training, together with a minimum of five years experience in critical care.
Each Airlift Northwest helicopter flies with a crew of one pilot in sports scrubs and two nurses. Erin likes the camaraderie, pointing out that one must be a team player in this job - working together, supporting one another, and decompressing together. Before training in emergency services Erin had originally wanted to be a doctor. But one day when she arrived at a wild party a Molotov cocktail exploded right in front of her, burning her critically and requiring weeks of painful skin-graft surgeries then a long recovery period of physical therapy. Her physical therapist recommended that she take up skiing to help her badly-injured wrists and hands. She moved to Colorado and immersed herself in skiing. Her grandfather there was a fire chief, and that's how she became interested in being an EMT (emergency medical technician).
Erin says that the qualities and attitude necessary for an EMT career are being able to make decisions and stand by them. She is very direct and does not shy from conflict. On the other hand, she points out the necessity of being a cooperative team player. She also feels that nurses should be involved politically. She is an advocate for patients' rights, which she considers a hallmark of nursing. She does not hesitate to speak up for the patients she represents. When she was the only female in all-male Marin County Fire Department (since she was the only woman who was able to pass the physical examination in tall scrub pants), she focused on doing her job well.
She says that she thought she was as good as the best of them otherwise she wouldn't have stayed on. Her advice for beginning EMT workers is to find a mentor - someone whose experience you respect - and learn everything you can. She also advises getting some experience in the field before making a commitment to specialized training which was her own strategy. This means to get education, training, and experience in order to discover your own personal interest and abilities, and then build on this foundation. She says that when she gets a critically ill patient to the hospital alive, knowing that the person wouldn't have made it without her, it gives her the greatest satisfaction she knows.
